Let's Talk About How to Use Storytelling in Marketing

Stories are a bridge to your customers.

At Kzoom, we really believe in the power of storytelling in marketing. Every business, every product, and every success is a story. We watched the story of Facebook unfold in The Social Network. Phil Knight, the founder of Nike, told his story in Shoe Dog. And, of course, who could forget the story of Chev Chelios, a former hitman who survived falling from a helicopter only to be outfitted with a faulty artificial heart in Crank 2: High Voltage?

Stories aren’t just important in retrospect. Stories – and storytelling – are marketing. You should consider your story at every stage of your planning.

In the past, we’ve discussed using storytelling to connect with your company’s audience. Stories are a great way to leverage the power of a common language. When you frame your marketing campaigns as stories, you’re utilizing a grammar that people are inherently familiar with. Recently, we launched the third in our series of podcasts. This one, titled, ‘Why Do Stories Matter in Marketing?’ focuses on – you guessed it – storytelling!

So, why is storytelling in marketing so important?

Let’s see what Kzoom’s marketing expert Kiah had to say…

Kiah: So, we’re starting off with a huge topic at Kzoom: storytelling. Using stories in your marketing is basically just marketing. So, obviously, that’s what we’re going to start with today. Basically, that begins with building a campaign. The word campaign in marketing is scary because it often makes people think they need to have, like, a year’s worth of planning.

Kiah: And, well, I don’t agree. I think a campaign could be a month. It could be two weeks. A campaign is just a plan you create to tell your story.

Kiah: First, you define your base. You determine what you’re talking about. You figure out who you’re talking to. Then, you need to let them see themselves in the story. What are they going to do? How are they going to fit into your story? This is personalization. What’s their pain point? How does your company, your product, or your service address it? So, now you’ve made it possible for them to see themselves in your story, in your marketing.

Kiah: Once you find that, that’s your call to action. The ending is: you can be in this story. This can be you. Are you going to reach out and call us so that we can solve this for you?
